Helston to prepare for floods

RESIDENTS in the lower part of Helston are being warned to prepare for possible flooding over the weekend.

The Environment Agency and Cornwall Council are urging them to take precautions to reduce the effects of flooding on their properties.

Areas said to be at risk include St Johns Road, St John's Close, Almshouse Hill, the Market Area, Mill Lane, Castle Green, St John's Business Park, St John's Road and Helston Boating Lake .

The agency said that high levels of rainfall during the summer and autumn has led to rising water levels in both the River Cober and Loe Pool.

With the Met Office predicting further rainfall over Saturday night and Sunday morning, the Environment Agency is warning this could lead to water from the pool backing up into the River Cober due to outfall from the pool into the sea not being able to cope with the high flows.

The Environment Agency is bringing in specialist high capacity pumping equipment to help increase the amount of water being discharged from the Pool through the outfall onto the beach.

The agency's Duncan Struggles added: "It is possible that this increased level of flood risk could also continue for the next few weeks if the county continues to experience high levels of rainfall.

"We would urge people to stay away from Loe Pool during the weekend."

The agency is also providing advice and information on how the householders can help protect themselves and their properties.

This includes encouraging people to prepare their own sand bags and flood boards and placing them around doors and windows. These are available from builders merchants and other similar retailers.

Cornwall Council will also have stocks of sandbags available for distribution by its staff in emergency situations. Anyone experiencing an emergency situation should contact the Council on 0300 1234 222 or phone 999. Information is also available on the Council's website www.cornwall.gov.uk.

Members of the public are advised to observe and comply with any safety notices located around Loe Pool and Loe Bar.

Staff from the Environment Agency and Cornwall Council have been working throughout the day to ensure that emergency plans are in place for the area. They will also be on 24 hour standby to deal with any emergencies over the weekend.
