Heroic driver averts explosion
A HEROIC BMW driver who risked his own safety driving his flaming car away from a petrol station, has been praised by firefighters.
He was filling up at the Tesco petrol station in Daniel Lane at about 8pm on Wednesday, February 13, when his engine caught fire and it started to spread into the car.
Firefighter Pete Richardson said the man fearlessly climbed back into the vehicle and drove it away from the pumps.
He was overcome by smoke and had to abandon the car at the side of the garage.

The mystery hero and forecourt staff then used dry powder extinguishers on the flames before fire crews arrived.
"We have to praise his efforts for avoiding a potentially massive explosion," said Mr Richardson.
"But although his heroic actions and quick-thinking helped avert a disaster, we would not encourage anyone to risk their own safety by getting back into a burning car.
"The forecourt staff acted brilliantly too."
