Spectacularly staged, batteries of lights create fantastic effects as they sweep skaters with lasers. A screen of LCD lights pulses with colour, giving a sensation of huge speed as trains race along the railtrack.
Directed and choreographed by Arlene Phillips, with musical direction by Dave Rose, multi-skilled performers on rollerskates sing, dance and act, each a believable character. Sleek and glittering Electra (Mykal Rand) is "the engine of the future"; diesel engine Greaseball (Jamie Capewell) is current champion while three athletic Hip Hoppers prove that "freight is great".
Wowed by the charismatic engines, coaches Pearl, Dinah, Duvay and Buffy are a glamorous quartet. Dinah the dining-car (Kerry Stammers) recounts a comic tale of woe in her number U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D. while Pearl (Amanda Coutts) anguishes over her attraction to Electra or loyalty to Rusty.
Encouraged to believe in himself by velvet-voiced Poppa (Lothair Eaton), Rusty (Kristofer Harding) sets out to prove that "nobody can do it like a steam train". In a magical moment the inspirational Starlight Express gives him strength. Rusty makes his mark on the track with a daring rescue in a nail-biting finish.
