Hicks blown away after beating Whirlwind
ANDY Hicks put an end to Jimmy White's hopes of qualifying for the World Championships with an enthralling 10-8 victory over the 'Whirlwind' in Sheffield on Sunday, writes Lee Hall.
But the Falmuth Bell's Court professional's own aspirations of sealing his place at the Crucible next month suffered a huge blow in the following round – the last 64 – when he suffered a 10-8 defeat at the hands of Rory McLeod. Hicks went into the McLeod clash in confident mood after his encounter with White.
The 35-year-old, sponsored by UKIS, produced a 135 clearance to go 9-7 up, before White pulled a frame back with a 102 break.
But Hicks made sure of his place in the next round by making a 60 break to record a famous win over the snooker legend.
But after being struck down with a virus on the morning of his game against McLeod, Hicks struggled in the opening frames, eventually losing 10-8, to miss out on a last 32 qualifying clash with Ian McCulloch.
Hicks, who will become a dad for the second time in July, is now 49th in the world rankings. A place in the top 48 would have guaranteed the Tavistock-born player £10,000 in prize money.
