Hog's pudding world champion is discovered
ONE of the West Country's "forgotten" culinary classics, the hog's pudding, took centre stage in a new competition.

The hotly contested title took place at the City Inn, Truro, attracting 15 entries and more than 100 locals and visitors who acted as judges.

"There was strong competition, but it was a unanimous decision to award the title to Retallick Family Butchers.
"Hog's pudding doesn't get the recognition it deserves so we wanted to do something at the City Inn to raise awareness, as well as help a local charity."
The day, which raised more than £500 for Mount Edgcumbe Hospice, had been dreamt up by former regular Dianne Martin, who died of cancer in December 2008.
Her widower Mike said: "There has been a long association with the City Inn and hog's pudding and Dianne always thought it would be fun to do something different and suggested the idea of a competition.
"It has shown there is the interest and I think it's great that so many people came along to support this event.
"It was also wonderful to have raised money for Mount Edgcumbe, who gave support to Dianne and myself during her battle with cancer."
Hog's pudding is a type of sausage that is sometimes described as the West Country's own haggis, with versions of the recipe comprising pork meat and fat, suet, bread and oatmeal or pearl barley.
Winner Colin Retallick was awarded the Dianne Martin Shield, which will remain in the pub, as well as the Dianne Martin Cup, after being voted the favourite during a blind taste test.
Mr Retallick said: "This is an amazing accolade to be crowned world champion at the first event.
"I made my first hog's pudding in 1966 when England won the World Cup and now I'm champion I'm hoping that it will prove to be a good omen."
Second place went to Cornish Quality Meats, with Tywardreath Butchers in third.
