A police spokesman said this evening: "At this time the fire is still burning and the hotel has been evacuated.
"A number of local residents surrounding the hotel have been evacuated as a precaution.
"The Cornwall Council Emergency Planning officer has opened a local rest centre for approximately 30 displaced residents.
"At this time there have been no reports of any injuries.
"The police have declared this as a major incident."
Neighbouring residents have been advised to keep windows and doors closed as smoke pours out into the sky.
The hotel has been earmarked for demolition and eventual redevelopment. It is regarded locally as one of the town's worst eyesores and has been the scene of flytipping incidents in the past.
New site owners, The Verto Group, have outlined plans to build 13 town houses on the site.

“my cousin had a car that would not start and was stuck in the farm yard for months. Then one night someone came along and must have driven it away because it was found burnt out about a mile away. I know they were bad for doing this but they must have been really good mechanics to solve the starting problem...”
