Horsemeat scandal "inevitable" according to Cornwall Food and Drink
The horsemeat scandal that has shocked the nation was "inevitable" according to a leading food and drink organisation in Cornwall.
Cornwall Food and Drink said "convoluted supply chains" and the incessant pressure to push food prices down had caused the horsemeat debacle.

The horsemeat scandal was "inevitable" according to Cornwall Food and Drink
Both the Aldi supermarket chain and food suppliers Findus have withdrawn meat products from French supplier, Comigel found to contain horsemeat.
Ruth Huxley from Cornwall Food and Drink said: "We're outraged, but sadly not surprised, that this has occurred. It was almost inevitable that the convoluted supply chains that have become the norm, and constant pressure on making food as cheap as possible, would one day lead to something like this.

Mrs Huxley said she hoped the scandal would lead people to look closely at their shopping and eating habits.
She said: "Whether it's beef or horse, how many of us ever stopped to think, for example, that a frozen ready meal sold in the UK might be made in France from ingredients apparently sourced from Romania?"
Cornwall Food and Drink said people could make sure they know what they're eating by using their local suppliers.
Mrs Huxley said: "Buying direct from the many superb farm shops, farmers' markets and butchers here in Cornwall comes with an assurance that you know where your meat has come from – and if it's not immediately clear you can at least ask a real person."
Cornwall Food and Drink has recently launched the Choose Cornish campaign which emphasises all the benefits of using local suppliers, whether you're a caterer, food manufacturer, or just buying your weekly groceries.
Mrs Huxley said: "If any good can come of this scandalous affair, let's hope some local businesses benefit from a well-deserved boost in trade."

“Nothing new:- http://tinyurl.com/adgx2lt
At least horse is still meat, but when certain people are chasing a profit, they'll do anything. Either there is going to be a lot more found, of increasingly unpleasant variety, or a lot of companies are going to report lower profits next year, or even losses, or the price of all food will rise even higher.”

“My apologies to all curry lovers; but there was a a restaurant in a well known seaside town that that used to serve curried 'dog'; by another name of course. . If you are always be able to taste what you are eating, you won't go far wrong.”

“Both Findus and Tesco have emphatically denied that any seahorse meat is used in the production of their range of economy fish fingers.
NBG1971 why on earth would anyone expect compensation a valuable consumer lesson has been rammed home by this debacle in so far that if you but cheap food it is probably substandard while locally sourced food is fully traceable and accountable and in reality not that much more expensiver when the benefits are taken into account.”

“Get all the local abattoirs open again, right across the country. . Their closure was more to do with 'control' by the EU and government in this increasingly 'Big Brother', micro-chipped and tagged society in which we are now living.”

“Just goes to show that you cannot trust, and I mean TRUST, any of the major corporate supermarket chains and their suppliers with food.
What other surprises don't we know about that the supermarkets keep under lock and key.
It's just more of a reason to support what's left of independent food suppliers before the corporate supermarkets finally control every sector of the human food supply. This is just a taste of things to come if people don't stop the evil rot of a controlled food chain through the supermarkets.”

“Well at least it's meat. . Those that just hide what they are consuming with curry powder are just deluding themselves that it must be wholesome.”

“If you check out the EU-mandated regulatory procedures you'll find that there are many many ways to de-fraud the system, all of them AFTER the meat has left the slaughter houses. This is down to the basic fact that the whole system relies on a paper trail and almost nothing else. If the documents say the meat is "beef" then it must be beef. That's the system in a nutshell!
The sooner we exit the EU the better off we'll be!

“Lower car parking charges in town and city centres would make it easier to buy from local suppliers.”
