Portreath 1, Penzance Res 2

A TOM Hosking brace saw the Magpies to a narrow victory over the Gulls in an evenly fought game at Ciljah Croft on Saturday.

With both sides weakened by cricket call-ups, play for the most part was scrappy until the half hour when former Magpies' winger Duane Britten had a shot following a corner cleared off the line.

But Britten was to have better luck four minutes later when he fired a low drive past stand-in Penzance keeper Dexter King.

It took the visitors just two minutes to get back on level terms, Hosking scoring from 10 yards from Ashley Thomas' cross. Chances were few and far between after that, though Thomas was only inches too high with a long range lob just after the break.

The winner came on 63 minutes when Hosking fired home after latching on to a clever Gary Matthews flick.

Portreath nearly grabbed a late equaliser, but Adam Nucifero blasted his chance over the bar.

Penzance travel to Penryn on Saturday (3pm) before playing their final game of the season at league leaders Perranporth on Tuesday night (6.30).

Mullion 5, Ludgvan 0

A CONVINCING victory over a depleted Ludgvan side lifted Mullion two places up the table and away from the drop zone at Clifden Park on Saturday.

The home side opened their account after just three minutes when Dave Phillips ran on to Danny Hickey's through ball and shot past Ludgvan's stand-in keeper Austin Smith.

Simon James brought a fine save from home keeper Daniel Higgins, but Mullion extended their lead five minutes before halftime when Ben Allen rifled Casey Adams' cross into the top corner.

The home side went further ahead on 55 minutes when Darren Meagor combined with Charlie Cheetham before crossing for Phillips to notch his second. And Meagor was again the provider 10 minutes later with another pinpoint cross for Hickey to head past Smith.

Smith then pulled off a fine save from Alex Sharkey's penalty attempt after handball in the area by a Ludgvan defender. Soon afterwards Hickey rattled the crossbar with a long range effort before Tom Hendy headed home the fifth from a Matt Fox cross.

In the last minute a superb double save by Higgins from Simon Bendall's shot and Mark Lillicrap's follow-up header denied Ludgvan a late consolation goal.

Hayle Res 0, St Day 3

THIS was an encouraging attacking display by St Day who completed their scoring before the interval.

There was little between the teams in the league table before kick-off, but Lee Gribble put his side ahead after just 15-minutes. He set up an attack down the left, broke inside and cracked in a shot beyond the keeper's grasp from a tight angle.

Ten minutes later a quickly-taken free-kick by Perran Cooke found midfielder Adam Barnicoat who hit the ball first-time past the keeper.

The third goal, after 34 minutes, came from Sam Cooper from close range, just inside the six-yard box. The ball broke to him and he slotted it in to the net.

Hayle had a good share of attack in the second-half, piling on the pressure, but the visitors' defence stood firm with Danny Watts and Steve Wheatley in fine form.

The home side wasted some good opportunities, but St Day almost had another when Cooke netted, but because of an injury sustained by the home keeper – with a cut over an eye – a goal was disallowed and the ball dropped.

● After Tuesday night's 3-1 home win against St Day, Perranporth require only four points from their remaining five games to clinch the title and promotion to SWPL division one west.

Player-manager Ian Gosling, Rob Stapleton and Justin Andrew scored for the leaders, with Truro City's Sam Cooper gaining St Day's consolation.

Perranwell moved back to within a point of second placed Illogan as two goals from Scott Kinge and once apiece from Liam Paddock and Ieuan Boon gave them a 4-2 win at Helston, who replied through Dominic Pullen and Colin Kettle.

St Just had Neil Curnow on target in a shock 5-1 defeat at Culdrose, whose Nick Longstaff netted a fine hat-trick.

St Ives won 3-1 at Falmouth with goals from Darren Steadman, Chris Russell and Daniel Bagshaw, while Dave Blizzard got the only goal of the game as Penryn beat Hayle 1-0.

Down at the bottom of the table, Wendron beat Ludgvan 5-2, with Wendron's goals coming from Luke Murray (2), Tom Langford, Simon Anderson and an own goal. Lee Smith and David Chard replied for the Hurlers.
