OBJECTORS to an affordable housing scheme in Carbis Bay have expressed their disappointment after the plans were deferred for the second time.

About 400 residents have signed a petition against a 41-house development off Polmennor Drive.

They say there are issues with access and insufficient evidence of need, with St Uny School already being oversubscribed.

Spokesman Steve Herbert said: "Planners have failed in their duty to address accurately the material issues of this application.

"They have taken for granted important information without rigorous investigation of the facts and failed to demonstrate impartiality.

Abused term

"Like other interested parties we would welcome a debate on the issue of 'affordable housing' – a term which is greatly abused. The system is government-led with planners pressurised to meet meaningless targets and councillors intimidated by applications labelled 'affordable'."

The Campaign to Protect Rural England has also lodged its objection following concerns from local residents. After examining the application which, according to them indicates lack of consultation, secretary Ted Venn wrote: "This failure to consult the local community not only shows an unbelievable arrogance but also emphasises the reason why so many local residents are against the proposal."

A third planning hearing on the scheme was due to be held last night, with officers recommending it hoping for a definitive decision.

“The truth is we have enough housing. Perhaps the hundreds of properties lying empty over the winter in Carbis Bay and St Ives could provide a solution here? Having lived in the area for over 10 years, I have noticed the recent huge surge in holiday lets and second homes which has had a severe negative impact. I understand we rely on tourism to keep the economy (barely) going, but this problem needs addressing and soon.”

“Hear we go again; we can¿t have the nasty layabouts infecting our neighbourhood. God forbid that anyone with a local connection to this area should stand any chance of getting their child into a good school or have a decent home. Perhaps the socially repugnant residents of Carbis Bay need to have a good ard look at their social conscience.”
