THE news that the vote to repeal the Hunting Act will not go ahead in 2011 did not dampen spirits at the Four Burrow Hunt on Monday.

About 30 riders braved the cold weather, frozen ground and occasional showers for the traditional event at Carn Brea.

Joint master Tony Blumenau said: "The turnout was a bit low but that's to be expected – we have had three weeks where people haven't been able to get their horses out of their stables because of the weather."

The event is usually held on Boxing Day but was moved because it does not take place on Sundays.

Mr Blumenau said: "It did lead to a bit of confusion. I went up on Boxing Day to explain why we were not there to the people who turned up."

Showing their support, about 200 people joined the hunt on foot or watched from the panoramic viewing point of Carn Brea Castle.

Last Friday senior officials at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs admitted the Conservative's promise to hold a vote on repealing the fox hunting ban is not likely to happen in 2011.

Agriculture Minister Jim Paice said: "There are many greater priorities facing the Government at the moment."

Mr Blumenau said: "The coalition have an awful lot of problems to sort out and as we would expect, hunting has to be sidelined by the more important things which need dealing with.

"The commitment was made by David Cameron and the Conservatives that when the time was right they will revisit the situation and we will hold them to that."

Cury Hunt also met in Helston on Monday morning, with some riders decorating their horses for the occasion. Secretary Sue Coates said: "After all of the bad weather I think people were glad to get out."
