HIGHER fuel prices have forced a Newlyn fishing firm to make 16 of its staff redundant.

W Stevenson & Sons said the redundancies were regrettable and would affect all areas of business.

A press release stated that while the company is committed to continue to play a major role, the redundancies were necessary to safeguard the jobs of the remaining employees and fishermen.

Representatives from the Newlyn fishing industry are in a meeting with the Marine Fisheries Agency this afternoon to discuss the future of the fishing port.

“Did you say modern, fast thinking and with flexible policies to adjust quickly...? What drugs are you on? These people aren't interested in Fisheries in Cornwall, no more than I am in Chinese tobacco paper. The only way you'd get what you want is to have a more powerful authority in Cornwall with less losers and self-important prats in it; hopefully, the new Single Cornish Authority will start that process... Can't get worse than corrupt no-hopers in London trying to run Cornish affairs...”

“The Labour government is a disgrace. It continually lets down our food producers whether farmer or fisher. This government has to go and go very, very soon.”

“These are difficult times for every industry, not just our important fisheries. It would be a big step forward if Government was able to be modern, fast thinking and with flexible policies to adjust quickly to the changing world and economic climate. Thus having a chance to protect and nurture our economy in a steady and sustainable direction.”
