Extra hole win for Carlyon Bay duo
CARLYON Bay's Gavin Rowett and Jeff Hammett will take on Newquay pair David Pryor and Andy Hancock in the quarter-finals of the Perranporth Open Winter Foursomes, sponsored by the Money Group, after they both came through tough third round matches on Sunday.
Rowett and Hammett had to go to the first extra hole before clinching their place in the last eight, while Pryor and Hancock were only slightly less hard pressed in their 2&1 win.
Elsewhere, two Perranporth father and son pairings eased through to the quarter-finals on their home course. Norman and Sandy Kirton were taken to the last green before eventually triumphing by one hole, while Alastair and Sam Chivers had an easier time on their way to a 3&2 victory.
The two family pairings will avoid each other in the last eight, but could meet in the semi-finals if they both win their quarter-final matches.
The Kirtons will face the Falmouth partnership of Paul Huckle and Mickey Doust, who were 2&1 winners, while the Chivers take on Perranporth's James Davidson and former county champion Jon Coleman, of West Cornwall, who clinched their match on the final green.
In the tightest match of the day, Hayle Golf professional Wayne Graham and county amateur Matt Richards, of West Cornwall, finally prevailed at the third extra hole over Perranporth pair Graham Burn and Clive Martin.
In the last eight they will face West Cornwall secretary Gareth Evans and his clubmate and former county champion Peter Darlington, who emerged as winners by two holes.
The quarter-final matches will be played on Sunday, January 20, as will those in the Plate competition, which has reached the same stage.

A strong field of the county's top amateurs will compete in the penultimate event in the Cornwall Winter Golf Series at Trevose this Sunday.
However, a likely absentee due to business commitments will be Wales international Ben Westgate (Trevose), who will miss out on the chance to make it a hat-trick of wins after his victories in the previous two rounds at Perranporth and Newquay.
He lies in third place in the Order of Merit having also missed the first event of the series at Bowood Park, which was won by current OoM leader Matt Richards, of West Cornwall, with former champion Josh Greenaway, of Bowood Park, in hot pursuit in second place. The final event of the series is due to be played at St Enodoc on Sunday, February 10.

After turning pro in 2007, he spent five years as assistant at Saunton Golf Club in Devon before moving to Cornwall. His main aim now at St Mellion will be to develop the teaching side of the Academy and increase the level of coaching for both juniors and beginners.
He will also be delivering tri-golf and golf x-treme coaching at local schools and plans to take the sport into the local community.
Avery has already signed up for the Cornwall Open Golf Weekend in late March and the Cornwall Golf Week in April. Both events are designed to attract more people to try their hand at the game.
