Judge bans driver who accrued 20 points
A JOB with Meals on Wheels did not convince a judge to allow a Nanstallon man who accrued 20 penalty points for motoring offences to keep his driving licence.
Oliver Coomber already had nine points on his licence and gained 11 more when he appeared before District Judge Paul Farmer to be sentenced for seven offences on July 16. The judge banned him for six months.
Coomber had driven with tyres which were devoid of tread in Bodmin and Wadebridge in December last year and April this year and on the second occasion was also found to have defective wipers, exhaust, rear lamps and an obscured registration plate.
Furthermore, on February 29 he had driven at 83mph in a 60mph area on Treningle Hill, Bodmin, prosecutor Elaine Hobson told Bodmin court.
Coomber, of Russetts, Goldbank, applied to the judge not to impose the ban, saying he had recently secured the job after being unemployed for 18 months and needed to be able to drive to keep it. He had now bought a new car.
However, Mr Farmer said that 21-year-old Coomber had taken on the job when he must have known he was likely to lose his licence.
Coomber was fined £215 with a £15 surcharge as well as being disqualified.
