Kessell's try double sees Cornish Pirates to victory
Cornish Pirates 16 London Scottish 8
Two Tom Kessell tries either side of half-time proved decisive as the Cornish Pirates won an attritional battle against London Scottish in the Mennaye Field drizzle, writes Dick Straughan.
The win keeps the Pirates in fifth place in the table but ensures that they remain in touch with the leaders ahead of this weekend’s fixtures as the Championship table begins to take shape.
After a scrappy start the Pirates took the lead in the seventh minute as scrum-half Kessell sniped over from a driving maul to score from close range.

The game remained a cagey affair with the Pirates edging the set piece and forcing errors from the visitors until London Scottish levelled the game with their first attack. Wing Miles Mantella sold a good dummy to create space and dotted down in the corner for 5-5.
Kieran Hallett restored the Pirates lead with a penalty just before the interval but his opposite number, Lee Millar, tied the contest again early in the second half with a routine penalty.
The game turned back in favour of the Pirates just before the hour mark when they stole the ball at a scrum on halfway and Kieran Hallett deftly chipped the ball down the right flank.
Wing Mike Pope forced Scottish full-back Jim Thompson into touch and from the lineout the Pirates pack drove onto the line with Kessell supplying the finish.
Hallett then added a penalty to give the Pirates breathing space and Kieran Goss should have added a third try only to spill the ball forward in the act of scoring.
A late injury to Scottish scrum-half Jamie Stevenson led to a lengthy delay but the Pirates closed out the game for their fourth league win of the season.
