A TEENAGE driver has admitted causing the death of a motorist from Launceston in a head-on crash near the Devon-Cornwall border.

Adam Garthwaite sobbed throughout a ten-minute hearing on Friday at Exeter Crown Court in which he admitted causing the death of Paul Garcia by careless driving.

Mr Garcia, 38, died in hospital from injuries received in the crash on the A388 between Clawton and St Giles on the Heath just before 5.30pm on March 1 last year.

His Peugeot 106 car was in collision with a Vauxhall Astra van driven by Garthwaite.

Garthwaite, of Hele Lane, Frithelstock, Devon, admitted dangerous driving and causing death by careless driving.

Judge Erik Salomonsen adjourned the case for sentencing next month and imposed an interim disqualification.

He told Garthwaite: "You have pleaded guilty to two serious offences.

"You have clearly had good legal advice and you will receive credit for pleading guilty at this early stage.

"I am adjourning sentence for a pre-sentence report. I grant you bail and disqualify you from driving. I make no promised about the eventual outcome of the case."

The case was not opened and no details of the circumstances were given to the court by either the prosecution or the defence.
