Bodmin Town 1 Saltash United 1

Saltash United moved up to second in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League on Friday night after holding champions Bodmin to a draw at Priory Park.

The Ashes were full value for their point, even though it took an 87th minute deflected free kick from Demitri Kanakh to level the scores.

Saltash, beaten only once in nine premier division games this season, then came desperately close to snatching victory in the last minute when Richard Maddison steered a close range shot agonisingly wide after a great run and cross from substitute Matt Cusack.

Bodmin had taken an 18th minute lead when an Olly Brokenshire free kick from the right was headed into his own net by Matt Godfree.

But Darren Gilbert's side, normally so strong at home, were unable to turn possession into chances and Saltash goalkeeper Ben Elphick was rarely troubled.

At the other end it took a superb last ditch tackle from Luke Rundle in the 44th minute to deny Kanakh a certain goal, and a minute later the former Liskeard striker forced Bodmin keeper Kevin Miller to tip over his 25 yard shot.

Saltash continued to press for an equaliser after the break and created a great opportunity in the 49th minute when Maddison's ball from the left, pulled back behind Bodmin's defence, fell into the path of Luke Doddridge, but he fired high and wide.

Two minutes later a Maddison corner was met by Godfree but his bullet header was cleared off the line by Rundle.

Bodmin had two strong appeals for penalties rejected, with the referee deciding that challenges by Stuart Clark and Toby Clark on Chris Luxton were fair.

Then it was the turn of Saltash to claim a penalty when Doddridge went down under a challenge from Tom Chambers four minutes from time. But again the referee saw nothing wrong.
