Launceston powerlifter breaks national record
A LAUNCESTON powerlifter has broken the national bench press record with her debut lift in her first ever competition.
Jade Farrington, 26, smashed the previous British Drug Free Powerlifting Association (BDFPA) single lift unequipped bench press record in the women's under 58.5kg weight category.
She lifted 50kg on her first attempt at the 2012 South West Divisional Single Events Championships in Plymouth on Sunday – 5kg more than the previous record of 45kg. She then broke her own new record with lifts of 55kg and 60kg.
Jade, who trains at Crunch Gym in Launceston and Plymouth Performance Gym, said: "I'm really proud to be the new record holder and I want to thank everyone who helped me do it.

"I started weight training two years ago but I only took up powerlifting in October and it never entered my head that I would soon be breaking a national record."
Merwyn Quick, who runs Crunch Gym with her husband Mark, said: "Jade can and will achieve anything she wants, we have seen and helped in her training and Jade will go far. Team Crunch will be behind her every step of the way."
Jade's left femur was replaced with a metal prosthesis following bone cancer aged nine.
In November she passed a national assessment and was selected to train with elite coaches at the British Weight Lifting headquarters in Leeds with the aim of qualifying for the 2016 Paralympics.
She also trains at Plymouth Performance Gym under head instructor Will Badenoch.
He said: "Since starting to work with Jade, I have been continuously impressed with her outstanding work ethic and commitment to her training.
"I have absolutely no doubt that now she has added Paralympic glory to her list of goals she will achieve this ambitious dream."
Jade is seeking sponsors to help her reach Rio as there is currently no funding available and she has to meet the costs for all training, competitions, travel and accommodation.
