THERE was a feast of fine tennis on the courts at Heron Tennis Centre in Newquay as this year's club championships reached their conclusion at the weekend.

The standout successes were local players, brother and sister Ryan and Lauren Norton, who won the men's and ladies' singles titles respectively and then teamed up together to take the mixed crown as well.

The men's singles final was between Ryan and Scott Sutherland, who had both moved through the draw without dropping a set. In a match with many hard fought points Ryan just proved the steadier and went on to win 6-2, 6-4.

The ladies' singles saw Heron team regulars Lauren and Louise Watson matched up, and once again a very well contested match was enjoyed by players and spectators alike with Lauren winning 6-4, 6-1.

The mixed doubles event involved a three-way play-off between Lauren and Ryan, Scott and Louise and father, daughter team, Rob and Rachel Gould.

All three matches were extremely entertaining but once again the accuracy and power of the Norton backhands and their all-round consistency proved just too much for the others.

In a rain-affected men's doubles event there were two super matches played. In the first, young Liam Manning and Jake Hartigan fought back brilliantly to cause a small upset in coming down from a set down to win against the fancied pair of Elliot Moses and visiting top German player, Till Richter.

In the next match Jake and Liam played well again, but the pairing of Scott and Ryan was too strong and they won through 7-5, 6-4. This leaves the final championship deciding match to be played later on.

The club championships aren't all about the best players, though, as another tier of competition is run for players below the top club standard (championship) and there were also events for over 55s included in the year's tournament.

In the men's singles championship level the final was between Glyn Talling, who had been pushed all the way in his semi by Jack Bright, and Chris Staveley, who had a more comfortable route to the final.

Glyn's tough semi had helped play him into match form and he played well to secure a 6-3, 6-4 win over a battling Chris.

The men's singles over 55s saw another bruising encounter between hard-hitting heavy-weights Frank Towning and Will Dixon. Frank's extra tournament experience (former Cornwall Corporate games men's singles champion) just gave him the edge and helped him to a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory against a much improved Will.

The men's doubles championship final was a re-run of one of the earlier qualifying encounters between Glyn Talling and Andy Stallard and youngsters Jack Bright and Tad Maclean.

The earlier match had been a close three-setter and once again this match went the full distance with Andy and Glyn once again managing to hold their nerve to win 7-5, 2-6, 10-6 but with youngsters improving so quickly the guys better watch out for next year.

Meanwhile, Tina and Hilda took the title of ladies' doubles champions for over 55s with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win over regular practice partners and friends Joyce and Wendy.

The day was nicely rounded off with a tasty meal and presentation ceremony in the clubhouse.
