It was a great day for the Lamerton Hunt at yesterday's Royal Cornwall Show when Kelly Rogers and her chestnut mount, The Lion King II, won the hotly contested local regularly Hunted class before standing overall champion of hunters.

Ride judge Helen Hillard from Gloucestershire described her 16-year-old champion as a "lovely old boy who moves like a dream", adding that "it shows that if they have good conformation they can last forever".

Beaming from ear to ear after giving the crowd a victorious gallop, Kelly said: "I feel quite emotional. He absolutely loved it in the ring today and he went really nicely for the judge – he was very polite."

The winning jockey added: "I've taken the ride over from my mum (Jean England) and since we've been hunting he has come into his own."

Commenting on the Lamerton country which extends into Cornwall, Kelly added: "You have everything from wonderful farmland to forestry and moorland – it's a great day out and the added bonus is that the Lamerton are made up of lovely people."

Nineteen combinations came forward for this popular class and second in the line-up was Fiona Jones (Four Burrow) and her smart chestnut mare Jaffa who also collected a special prize for best Cornish winner.

Also in the ribbons finishing third was Nicky Turiff and The Kings Cruet who is by the well-known local stallion Kings Composer. Fourth spot went to Juliette Hoskin and her grey home-bred Tredazzle. Western Hunt member Kadie Connolly stood fifth with her chestnut gelding Prince Jamie, with the only male rider in the class keen to give the girls a run for their money, David Gill (Four Burrow), sixth with Greylands Albert.

In the afternoon, the champion Lion King also joined in the massed parade of hounds in the main ring with Lamerton whipper-in Steve Craddock, who is Kelly's farrier.
