Hayle 20, Old Plymothian and Mannamedian 3

HAYLE maintained fifth place in the Cornwall & Devon League table with a hard-fought home win over a weakened OPMs outfit at the Memorial Park.

The visitors made the long journey west missing ten regular squad members and the match started with the Hayle pack dominating proceedings.

The Lions has the benefit of a strong wind at their backs and opened the scoring on ten minutes with a well worked try from Tony Matthews.

Hayle continued to dominate and on 28 minutes Matt Rashleigh went over for a try which Matt Strick converted.

The Plymothians replied with a penalty on 35 minutes with right-wing Dave Wood, marking his OPMs bow by scoring the visitors' only points with the boot.

The second half continued in a similar vein and Hayle extended their lead with a Strick penalty. And on 55 minutes the Lions added another fine try when Doug Arnull finished a move which started in their own half.

It seemed only a matter of time before Hayle would snatch the bonus try, but this was ultimately to allude them.

And despite the visitors penning Hayle back into their 22 late in the game, the home defence held firm as the Lions ran out comfortable winners.

Hayle travel to Newquay Hornets in a rearranged fixture this Saturday (2.30pm).

Hayle: A Strick, D Clackworthy, D Penrose, R Spears, A Thornton, D Miles, M Rashleigh, T Matthews, M Strick, S Harvey, D Arnull, J Cameron, S Murray, T Daniels, R Goodman, J Chadwick, P Lello, P Tonkin.
