A couple who were airlifted in Cornwall by air ambulance have said that their experience brought them closer together even resulting in a Valentines engagement.

Mandy McKinnon and her then boyfriend Iain were flown to hospital by air ambulance following a road traffic collision on the Atlantic Highway in August 2007.

Mandy suffered a broken back, 8 broken ribs and a 3 fractures to her right hand and her partner Iain suffered two broken wrists and a head injury when a car performed a U-turn in across their path.

Both the Cornwall and Devon Air Ambulances were on the scene within minutes and the couple were taken to hospital.

Both have made a full recovery now, although Mandy hasn't been on a bike since and was treated for post-traumatic stress syndrome.

"An experience like that will either drive a wedge between a couple or make them stronger." Said Mandy.

"Luckily for us it was the latter.

"Iain romantically proposed to me while I was at work, in front of everyone and we married in June last year.

"We are now looking forward to celebrating our first valentines day together as husband and wife."

The couple were keen to give something back to the charities that Mandy believes saved her life so they asked their guests to donate money to the air ambulances instead of buying wedding presents.

"We just think that the work they do is amazing, we can't thank them enough." Said Mandy.

"People say you have three minutes to save a life and I really do believe that they saved me that day."

Susie Smith fundraising manager for the Cornwall Air Ambulance said; "Mandy and Iain's story has such a happy ending, it's really heart warming.

"We were very touched at the generous donation that they have given us.

"We rely on generosity of people like Mandy and Iain to keep up this vital life saving work.

"Last year nearly a quarter of all road traffic collisions that we attended involved motorcycles, it's a familiar scenario."
