Difficult economic conditions made worse by a hike in car parking charges put retailers in Launceston on the offensive.

In May, the town's chamber of commerce launched the Love Launceston loyalty card, a free scheme which gives shoppers new offers every month.

Deputy chairman Paul Loft said it had been a success. "I think we have about 9,000 loyalty cards in people's purses and wallets. So far 98 businesses have joined up and the feedback is generally good."

The chamber realised it had to act after a rise in car parking charges in the market town prompted a "dramatic" downturn in footfall.

"The idea had been on the back burner for a while, but we decided to give it a go.

"It's good, although it's difficult to measure whether more people are coming to Launceston, I certainly feel it has increased community cohesion."
