MULLION Methodist church has helped raise enough money for three ShelterBoxes.

The group, touched by the scenes of devastation in earthquake-hit Haiti, decided to hold its February lunch time concert in aid of the charity's work in the country.

Mullion School Wind Band performed to a full chapel, including parents, grandparents and great grandparents of the band members.

The 22-strong band, under musical director Gareth Churcher, consisted of a wide range of wind instruments from clarinets to trumpets and horns with drums and keyboard accompaniments.

Ranging in musical ability from grade one to grade six, the young people played a range of group pieces, including a tricky medley of John Williams compositions arranged by Gareth.

Popular pieces such as the James Bond theme and Pirates of the Caribbean were much enjoyed.

Peter Richards, as the only trombone player, featured in A Drunken Sailor and the march from the film The Great Escape. Eleven other band members played duets or solos, including Annie Wilde, new to the school, who played Somewhere, from West Side Story, standing in for her brother, who had broken his arm.

Rebecca Aitchison came from her sick bed to play Rondino with Beth Lee for her grandmother and great grandfather who were in the audience.

The final piece, Jamaican Holiday, concluded the lunch time entertainment.

Headmaster Mike Sandford was thanked by Rev Sylvia Burgoyne for bringing the young people's music into the village and giving so much pleasure.

Donations from the concert raised £1,004 for the Haiti appeal.

Downstairs a hot lunch was served to the band and the audience and more than £500 raised.

With further donations, the total now stands at £1,600 for the event.
