The contract for her future maintenance is being put out to tender and A&P Falmouth, already responsible for maintaining ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA), has submitted a bid to the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Ms Newton said the contract would be a major boost to the docks and the local economy.
She highlighted to Mr Dunne A&P's good track record with MoD maintenance and their capability to take on more work in Falmouth.
Ms Newton said: "I was very pleased to have met with the Minister and to have had the opportunity to highlight the great work that A&P have proven themselves to be capable of.
"The competition for this contract will be fierce, but I believe that A&P will be able to submit a bid which is highly competitive and I will continue to do all that I can to help them in their efforts."
The final decision is scheduled to be made on April 1.
