A Westcountry Conservative MP is "appalled" that a group campaigning against gay marriage has used her photograph on its publicity leaflet without her permission.

The Coalition For Marriage (C4M) handed out the leaflets in Cornwall urging people to object to David Cameron's plans to extend marriage to same-sex couples.

Sarah Newton, Conservative MP for Truro and Falmouth, said the inclusion of her picture wrongly implied she supported the group and their arguments. The MP has invited C4M to speak at a public event, alongside the gay rights charity Stonewall, which will help determine how she votes in Parliament.

Mrs Newton said: "I do not endorse the leaflets. I am appalled that the Coalition for Marriage have chosen to use a photo of me without permission, apparently to give residents the impression that I support the claims made within their leaflet."
