The English Heritage quango is failing to promote the region's industrial landscape and should be replaced by a "Cornish Heritage" body, an MP has claimed.

George Eustice, MP for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle, says English Heritage has 'let Cornwall down' for years

George Eustice, MP for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle, is pressing the Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt to give cash to a new autonomous body in Cornwall by "top slicing" English Heritage's budget.

The Conservative MP has criticised the organisation for "letting Cornwall down for years" by not promoting its industrial history to boost tourism.

Five years ago, Cornwall and West Devon's mining structures attained World Heritage status, a badge of approval also held by the Egyptian pyramids and Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

He said: "It is time to question whether a group whose nearest office is in Bristol can possibly understand issues in Cornwall."

Mr Eustice has been engaged in a furious row with English Heritage over its opposition to building a supermarket, houses and a restaurant on Hayle's historic harbour.

English Heritage thinks the proposals at South Quay are "unacceptable", and claims plans approved by Cornwall Council put the world heritage status at risk.

But Mr Eustice, who says English Heritage has failed to recognise the heritage benefits of the scheme, argues: "English Heritage have been quick to use our World Heritage site status as a weapon in the planning process by fanning the flames of alarmist nonsense in respect of development plans, but they have done nothing to promote our heritage.

"Towns like Camborne, Redruth and Hayle, which make up the heart of the Cornwall's mining heritage, are not even mentioned on the English Heritage website. Instead, all you get are pretty pictures of castles in the home counties."

An English Heritage spokesman said it promotes sites which are "characteristic of Cornwall and the Cornish people" and has put sites into the hands of local people and trusts. She said: "English Heritage has always supported and invested in the strong cultural identity that exists in Cornwall.

"Over the years, we have spent many millions of pounds helping to conserve and repair Cornish heritage assets."

“BIg Ger. If you READ what I said I referred to the 'type' of people who rave on about immigrants. This may not be you personally but your are, generally, on the right in politics.

More importantly if someone is making a decision that concerns Cornwall in an office several hundred miles away and is not accountable to elected politicians in Cornwall, then of course no one who lives in Cornwall has that input.”

"Unless that is you are denigrating the work of "Save the moors" etc."

"English Heritage" seems to be well in control regarding those longhorn cattle on the moors?
Did EH ever get back and inform "Save the moors" regarding the meeting on the moor and what is going to happen with the cattle?...http://tinyurl.com/3y3u39j

“I have never "ranted" about immigrants DID, why do you have to lie so?

    As for you examples?

Did Cornish people not have input into these? Of course they must have, so your examples are null and void.

Unless that is you are denigrating the work of "Save the moors" etc.”

“Three postings from Big Ger! Gosh we are being intellectually spoiled. Nice to know that the type of people who rant about immigrants are prepared to have properties in Spain. Outside based agencies and quangos, where do I start? A Devon based police force who cannot protect the people of Lostwithiel adequately. The Exeter based RDA who caused no end of matched funding headaches for Cornish projects. English Nature wrecking the moors of Penwith. Not just the one example you asked for, but three. In all these cases the vast majority of the policy makers and managers who are dealing with issues concerning Cornwall are not based here and not accountable to Cornish politicians and the electorate.

Still, if you think it doesn't matter then you are making a great case for integrated European government. May make the Spanish operation easier!”

    “Here's a challenge to Doitdreckley.

If you believe "Quangos dealing with Cornwall who are not based in Cornwall will have little experience or knowledge of the place," then obviously you must have thought of, or know, and example or situation where this would occur to Cornwall's detriment.

    Please give us an example.”

Oh don't talk nonsense! Why would a county be such a mystery to anyone? It just goes to show that these so called "nationalists" cannot deal with the fact that others may have a more wide knowledge of places and issues than they do. I have properties in an area of Spain, I have an agent there, he keeps me up to speed on local news and development. Easy.

As I say, anyone who is so narrow minded as to not believe that an agency cannot have its offices outside of Cornwall, but employing people and spending money in Cornwall, in this day an age is only showing their ignorance of the world and how it works.

Would having English heritage offices in Bristol mean that all Cornish employees of EH would have to move to Bristol? No. Would liaison between EH and the county council be affected? No. Would EH Cornish members be unable to get their views across? No.”

“Ridiculous, English Heritage spends 3 times as much in cornwall as they earn from us. a "Cornish Heritage" would never cope.

Also, George Eustace says they've not done anything to promote Cornwall, and nothing to help the industrial towns, well what about the Cornish Centre and Cornish Studies Library in Reduth they part-funded?”
