MP calls for voluntary vaccination of badgers
ANDREW GEORGE MP has called for a badger vaccination programme to tackle bovine tuberculosis in west Cornwall after the Government shelved a proposed badger cull.
The Government has identified the area as a key problem area for bovine TB in cattle and the disease is still most prevalent in the west.
The MP for west Cornwall said he wanted farmers, wildlife experts and scientists to work together to vaccinate local badger populations.
Mr George, who supported a trial badger cull more than ten years ago, said a scientific approach was a better option and a cull might not be effective.

"The most useful thing we can now do is to galvanise the support of the local community, many of whom are up in arms at the idea of culling badgers, and ask them to offer their voluntary support in a vaccination programme.
"Some local landowners have already commenced a vaccination programme on their own land, so there is gathering experience.
"I'm also delighted that one of the lead scientists behind the original randomised cull, Professor Rosie Woodroffe, has offered her support.
"In the absence of any other likely constructive initiative, I believe our local cattle farmers deserve the support of a wider community in attempting to get on top of this devastating cattle and badger disease."
