MP's healthcare fears
ATTEMPTS by the operator of Cornwall's out-of-hours GP service to sub-contract its frontline work will result in a fragmented health service. That's the opinion of St Ives MP Andrew George who believes private contractor, Serco, should instead hand its contract back. The Devon Doctors consortium has confirmed it has held "early-stage talks" with Serco about taking over some "clinical elements" of its operation. Mr George said: "I think that Serco should hand back the keys if they can't do the job. "We are going to end up with a terribly fragmented health service if we have companies taking on contracts and then sub-contracting part of them." Serco said that sub-contracting evening and weekend services was only one option on the table. Dr Louis Warren, Serco's director for the GP out-of-hours service in Cornwall, said: "At this stage, no decision has been made. If such an arrangement were to be put in place, Serco would continue to be responsible and accountable to Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group for provision of the service."
