Cornwall MP Andrew George secures Commons debate on NHS reform 'concerns'

A Cornwall MP will today press ministers to ensure "ill-considered" NHS reforms do not damage the health service in the area.

Andrew George, Liberal Democrat MP for St Ives, has secured a debate in the House of Commons to tackle a series of issues affecting the NHS in Cornwall.

He will seek reassurance that Cornwall's decades of under-funding will be addressed, and that NHS services will not be put at risk from greater competition from private health companies.

Mr George, who serves on the cross-party Health Select Committee of MPs, is likely to raise questions about the Royal Cornwall Hospitals' debt and the low tariff payment to Cornish hospitals for procedures.

Mr George said: "I am full of praise to those local GPs, clinicians, nurses and other health professionals who are prepared to step up to the plate and to work their socks off to make sure that the Government's ill-considered health reforms do not damage our NHS in Cornwall.

"However, as we prepare for the roll-out of the new system in spring 2013, it is important that ongoing concerns can be registered and a dialogue commenced.

"Although I argued and voted against the Government and its Health Bill, unfortunately we failed to stop it.

"Now is the hard work to make sure that Cornwall's NHS does not end up fragmented and undermined; nor continue to be under-funded in contrast with the rest of the country."

Earlier this year, Mr George rebelled against the Government's NHS reforms and was later heckled in the Commons for opposing the overhaul.

At the time, he said the Health and Social Care Bill had "many failings" as he urged the then Health Secretary Andrew Lansley to scrap the reforms.
