Westcountry Conservative MPs have heaped praise on David Cameron's "statesman-like" conference address.

Conservative party deputy chairman Sarah Newton, the MP for Truro and Falmouth, said: "I don't think it is an exaggeration to say it was a Churchillian speech. It was about the battle for this country's future, and a battle for our future in the world. He showed how he has grown into being a statesman. And he told us a number of home truths. He showed what we can do and what we are doing to build a better future.

"In the Westcountry the importance of home ownership will be welcomed. We have lots of young people who are really struggling to own their own homes."

South West Devon MP Gary Streeter said: "I honestly think it was the best speech I have ever heard him give. For me it did the business, giving a clear sense of where we are going. The whole thing of Britain 'on the rise' and encouraging an 'aspiration nation'.

"It was frankly superb. It will help put some momentum behind the next two years of government. For people who want to get on it will resonate. I found it stirring and encouraging."

George Eustice, Conservative MP for Camborne and Redruth, and Mr Cameron's former Press aide, said: "This was a very powerful speech which showed that David Cameron has both a clear plan and the determination and mettle to see it through and tackle the serious problems our country faces.

"I especially welcomed his emphasis on supporting those who aspire to do better because we have to be the party that is on the side of those who try."
