Man charged with sex attacks 'made threats'
A BUDE man accused of a series of sex attacks on four women threatened his victims with violence if they told anyone about his attacks, a court has heard.
Jeremy Hawke, known as Jerry, 48, stood trial on Monday accused of 14 counts of raping two women and sexually assaulting two others over a 16-year period from 1995.
Hawke, of Breezy View, Hersham, Bude, denies the accusations, which came to light in 2011 after three of the women made complaints to the police.
Giving evidence at Truro Crown Court, the first alleged rape victim described how her attacker threatened to kill her or her children if she told anyone about what was happening.
She said that after the attacks she washed herself until she was sore.
When asked by Rupert Taylor, for the defence, why she had not reported the matter to the police until years after the incident, she said: "There is something wrong with him, something really wrong.
"I want the truth to be told in court."
Describing one of the attacks on the same woman, Mary McCarthy, for the prosecution, said: "[He] grabbed her by the throat, raped her. She was only seven stones in 1995.
"She was powerless to prevent this attack. He threatened that he would harm her or her children if she told anyone about it."
A second woman was also said to have been raped several times by Hawke. Ms McCarthy said he also threatened that woman and told her not to tell anyone about what had happened.
The other two women claim to have been sexually assaulted by Hawke.
Ms McCarthy said: "The defendant has pestered them for sex, has made demands that they have turned down and has then continued to do sex actions with them that they have not wanted and that they have not consented to."
He is accused of three counts of rape of the first victim and one of attempting to rape her on dates between June 1 and September 9, 1995.
Hawke is accused of sexually assaulting a second victim in August 17, 2007.
He faces a further three charges of raping a third victim on dates between July 1 and October 31, 2009 and four counts of sexually assaulting a fourth between May 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011.
Hawke denies all the charges.
The trial continues.
