Man in court after pensioner died in resort
A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a pensioner in Sidmouth.
Nicholas Jameson, 41 and from the East Devon town, has been charged with the murder of Brian Kemp, 71, from Nottingham.
Jameson's mother was in Exeter Magistrates Court for the brief appearance.
Police were called shortly after 10pm on Thursday night to the Black Horse Hotel in Sidmouth after reports that an elderly man had allegedly been assaulted.
They arrived to find customers battling to save a 71-year-old man who was suffering from suspected stab wounds.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate him but the man was pronounced dead a short while later.
An employee at the Fore Street hotel, who asked not to be named, said: "Everyone is pretty shook up about it."
The employee said Mr Kemp had checked into the hotel earlier in the week.
Police said they believed the incident was "isolated" but the force stepped up patrols and deployed extra officers in the area to "reassure local people".
Jameson was remanded in custody to appear before Exeter Crown Court.
