Man who died in £20 million drugs raid on Isles of Scilly named
A MAN who died after falling from the mast of a yacht during a £20 million drugs raid on the Isles of Scilly has been named.
It was confirmed today he was Christiaan Woestenburg, from the Netherlands.
The 62-year-old died during an operation by UK border police on June 17.
During the raid, 140kg of cocaine was seized, with an estimated value of £20 million.
There was no one else on board the yacht Windrose at the time, which had been towed to St Mary’s by the RNLI after losing power.
His identity was released by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is looking into the death with Devon and Cornwall Police. Talks have also been held with police in the Netherlands.
IPCC commissioner Jennifer Izekor said: “I would like to extend my sympathies to members of Mr Woestenburg's family and assure them that the investigation is progressing well.”
