Man pleads guilty to benefit fraud
A REDRUTH man was paid over £4,000 to which he was not entitled.
At Truro Magistrates' Court Phillip Wright, 61, of Jubilee Drive, Redruth, pleaded guilty to three offences of benefit fraud between 2012 and 2013.
Lisa Curnow, for Cornwall Council, said he had made a claim for housing benefit for a property in Charlotte Close, falsely stating that he was living there. His overpayments because of this came to £4,575.36, money which he was now paying off, leaving an outstanding amount of £4,477.84.
His solicitor John Boyle said he received incapacity benefit because he had a number of health problems.
He accepted blame for the fraud but felt he had been misled by the woman he was living with who told him she was going to take care of the housing benefit and sort everything out. He lied to keep the deception going so he could pay rent at the new address. Any money he had received from the authority had gone towards that rent. He was now receiving benefit for the new place.
Wright was fined £70 and £20 victim surcharge and told to pay £100 costs.
