An elderly driver had to be cut from his car by fire crews yesterday after a crash in North Devon.

His passenger, who reported suffering chest pains, was described as "walking wounded."

The female driver of the second car is also understood to have been hurt, but her injuries were described as "non-threatening".

Devon and Cornwall Police, air and ground ambulances, and the fire brigade were called to the A3072 at Anvil Corner, near Holsworthy, after reports that two people were trapped in their cars following an accident.

A police spokesman said a blue Vauxhall Zafira and a black Honda CRV were involved in the collision, which is thought to have happened at 11.45am.

Police closed the road while fire crews from Holsworthy and Hatherleigh released the male driver from his vehicle.

Devon Air Ambulance and South Western Ambulance attended the scene and the casualties were taken to hospital.

Fire crews made both vehicles safe and the road was reopened at 1.30pm.
