Marine artist sets £127,000 auction record
A new world auction record for a painting by Falmouth marine artist, Jamie Medlin, has been set at Christie's in London.
His latest picture sold for £127,250, more than double the sum it had been expected to fetch and also the first time a Medlin work has sold at an auction for a six-figure sum.
Before the sale ,the oil painting, The triumphant return of the J-Class to British Waters, The Solent 18-21 July,2012, had been expected to sell for between £30,000 and £50,000.
But in the end it was bought by a mystery bidder for £127,500, smashing the previous world auction record for a Medlin work.

The previous record was £49,250 paid at Christie's in London in November 2011, for Medlin's 2010 oil painting Mariquita racing to windward during the Pendennis Cup.
Penryn-born and Falmouth-based Medlin, 42, is a product of the Falmouth School of Art and Design and is now regarded as one of Britain's finest living marine artists.
Sarah Reynolds, a marine art expert at auctioneers Christie's, said: "Jamie Medlin is one of the finest living marine artists, whose work has garnered international recognition."
