AN INTERNATIONAL athlete from Redruth is touring local schools to inspire the next generation of sports men and women.

Great Britain triathlete and former double European surf lifesaving junior champion Mark Lewarne is delivering a series of presentations during assemblies.

He is using the 2012 Olympics in London to encourage local young people to strive to become the stars of the future.

During his presentations, Mr Lewarne talks about life as an international athlete and covers topics including training, competing, travelling and sponsorship.

He said: "I have only visited a couple of schools so far and already the response has been great from the kids. It looks as though they are really motivated to continue with their respective sports, put in the training time and strive to be the best they can be.

"Even those who thought they were not interested in sport seem to be interested and are excited.

"This has to be positive leading up to the 2012 Olympics in London."

Redruth currently has several young men and women putting their home town on the sporting map.

They include Jenna Hawkey (kayaking), Liam Norwell (cricket), Luke Collins (rugby) and Conor Robinson (running).

Mr Lewarne said: "Let's face it, the geography of the area does us no favours. In this tough economic climate to gain any sort of Lottery funding is a bonus in Cornwall.

"It is very difficult as we are overlooked as a county by many and very little money is sent our way.

"However, we must not let this be a barrier to success.

"We have had some world class athletes come through the system in Cornwall. As athletes and coaches we must use their example and not isolate ourselves from the rest of the country. The opportunities are there and hopefully these presentations will create a sense of optimism of a brighter future for sport in Cornwall."

Mr Lewarne is now working towards the World Triathlon Championships which take place in Beijing next summer.
