Torquay United manager Martin Ling is going back to Barclays Premier League club Reading to sign young defender Angus MacDonald on loan – for a second time.

MacDonald, 20, is poised to rejoin the Gulls until January, six months after he completed four months at Plainmoor first time round.

Ling has been looking to strengthen his centre-back roster for several weeks, and he said: "Angus did well here last season, he knows us and we know him and we're now covered at the back for what's going to be a busy and important time of the season.

"It gives us four centre-halves – Brian Saah, Aaron Downes, Kirtys McKenzie and Angus – between now and January.

"Aaron is on four bookings at the moment and, although we hope he won't, he will very likely have to serve a suspension before the New Year," Ling added.

"Kirtys has done nothing wrong, but, without Gus, even if Kirtys came into the side, we would have no other centre-half to be on the bench."

MacDonald made one start, a 1-0 win at Crawley Town in March, and two substitute appearances after first joining Torquay just before the close of the January 2012 transfer window.

The tall, strongly-built Southampton-born player, who has won international honours for England Under-16 and Under-19 sides, graduated through Reading's academy.

He had a loan spell at Blue Square Bet South club Basingstoke Town before joining United last season, and he started this season on loan at AFC Wimbledon before being recalled by Reading at the end of September.

The paperwork on his latest move to Torquay is due to be completed later today, he is expected to meet up with his former United team-mates at training tomorrow, and will go into the squad for Saturday's npower League Two trip to York City.

Yesterday's wet weather in the Westcountry played havoc with the non-League football fixture programme.

The Blue Square Bet South fixture between Eastleigh and Truro City was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch at the host club. The Red Insure Southern League Cup second-round tie between Tiverton Town and Paulton Rovers (which has been re-arranged for next Tuesday) was another game to be called off.

The Toolstation Western League Premier Division encounter between Ilfracombe and Willand Rovers also fell victim to the elements, while last night's two scheduled Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Premier Division matches were postponed.
