Plastic matting is being laid at Land's End Airport more than a month after it closed due to a saturated grass runway, it was announced today.

The airport, which serves the Isles of Scilly, has been shut since December 14 on every day but one due to waterlogging.

Skybus, which operates the service to St Mary's, said today it would remain closed until at least Monday, January 21, with all flights being diverted via Newquay Cornwall Airport.

The airfield, which has suffered some of the worst weather problems in its history since the end of October when the rival helicopter service stopped, will then be inspected and the situation reviewed.

Skybus says it is also working with the Council of the Isles of Scilly on a longer term solution, with Government funding to work up plans for a hard surface runway in the future.

A Skybus spokesman said: "With further rain predicted at Land's End Airport, falling on already saturated ground, it is still too wet to operate scheduled services from the airfield.

"We need a longer period of reasonable weather to allow the airfield to dry out and that is unlikely in the coming days so we will continue to operate via Newquay until at least Monday of next week.

"In the meantime we have taken delivery of plastic matting to reinforce the grass surface of the runway and will continue to install this over the next few days in addition to work already completed on the taxiways.

"We are also working with the Council of the Isles of Scilly on a longer term solution and welcome the council's confirmation this week that it has secured Government funding to help work up plans for a hard runway at Land's End, and its commitment to work with us on securing the necessary grant funding to help pay for an upgrade to the runway."

Skybus apologises for the inconvenience and all passengers are being notified. Anyone planning to travel during this time can contact Skybus on 0845 710 5555.
