Max-imum effort needed as rivals battle
THE rain relented just in time at Truro Rugby Club last week, as the record field of 222 runners set off in the Meet Your Max 6.7 mile multi-terrain race – round five of the Cornwall Multi Terrain Series, sponsored by the Personal Best Running Store at Carlyon Bay, St Austell.
An interesting men's race soon developed between 19-year-old Scottish Junior Cross Country international James Waldie (Cornwall AC), Mile High's Tony Brewer, the previous Saturday's Sticker 5 mile winner, Dan Rodgers (Launceston Road Runners) and the current Cornwall Grand Prix Men's champion, Dan Alsop (St Austell Running Club).
This quartet ran together over the first couple of miles before Edinburgh University student Waldie, moved ahead along the flat path bordering the Tresillian river.
Safely negotiating the steep woodland paths, the stream crossings and even the climb up the 100 slippery steps in Malpas, all of which provided a test of stamina for all the runners, Waldie coping better than most, extending his lead in the latter stages across the farm fields to win by 44 seconds, with Brewer hanging on for second place, six seconds ahead of Rodgers.

Alsop, who has been enjoying a break from serious training since the London Marathon, was more than content with his performance in finishing fourth. The winner Waldie said afterwards: "I felt a little tired, as I raced in the Scottish Fell Race Senior Championships in Abington last weekend and I also had to be a little careful, as I have been nursing a slight calf problem in recent weeks.
"But the race was certainly a tough and interesting challenge, which generally went well."
In the Ladies' race Newquay Road Runners Lucy Hodgson set the pace, with Isobel Wykes (Truro Running Club) following her muddy footsteps for the first four miles, before Lucy stopped at the infamous steps in Malpas to do up a shoe lace. Isobel was quick to take advantage of poor Lucy's mishap, bounding up the steps and establishing a lead which extended over the final couple of miles to win by one minute.
In the team competition, the up and coming Mile High squad were never seriously threatened, winning their second Multi Terrain Series race of the year, ahead of the current team leaders, St Austell Running Club, who will have their work cut out to challenge the Penryn-based club, if Mile High continue to target the remaining races in this series. Newquay Road Runners finished third.
With three runners in the top ten, the host club, Truro Running Club finished six points ahead of East Cornwall Harriers in the Ladies team race, with Newquay Road Runners again in third place, but only one point behind East Cornwall.
