FALMOUTH'S long-awaited new five-screen cinema is to officially open on May 1.

The opening, which is subject to the final licensing approval being given, is expected to be preceded by a fortnight of special screenings.

"We have lots of things planned," said Geoff Greaves, director of Merlin Cinemas.

The final planning consents, for the external signs, were granted this week and Mr Greaves is confident the licensing issues will be sorted in time.

The cinema, to be called The Phoenix, has been created out of the former disused and derelict Drill Hall in Berkeley Vale. The grade II listed building dates back to 1874 and used to house an indoor market.

Care has been taken to retain some of the building's historic features, while creating a modern, multi-screen cinema, which also boasts a cafe bar.

Although The Phoenix doesn't open for five weeks, potential customers can register online now for their Movie Magic discount card, which offers cut-price admissions among other benefits.
