NEWQUAY Surf Life Saving Club are celebrating after enjoying a very successful time at the annual Surf Life Saving Great Britain Championships at Portreath.

Fourteen youth members competed and battled with huge swells and atrocious weather conditions to achieve ninth position overall among 22 clubs competing.

The team came home with two golds, 11 silvers and one bronze, as well as some of the youths being GB champions in various disciplines.

Youth manager Julia Sharland said: "The comradery among the small team was immense throughout the two days: they supported one another wholeheartedly and shared each other's success.

Towards the end of the week the nippers competed. The club took a team of 32 nippers aged eight to 13. Thankfully the weather was warmer and the waters were a bit calmer for them.

They had a team of 32 competitors. The event comprised a 1k run, sea swims, board races, beach sprints, beach relays, board relay and taplin.

The team were fifth out of 23 clubs competing. Overall the nippers successfully achieved 63 medals (14 gold, 33 silver and 16 bronze).

Nipper manager Sue Butler said: "Once again we are over the moon with the kids from this year's event, they have all worked so hard and were an incredible team."
