Medieval techniques put to test for sustainable shelter
THE SUSTAINABLE Trust is to build a weather cover for woodland users at Crenver Grove at Praze-an-Beeble.
The bush shelter will be constructed by hand from coppiced sweet chestnut by woodworker Jamie Lovekin.

Pip Richards, director of the trust, said: "This will provide another educational activity centre in this 35-acre woodland. The school circle near the entrance is often overbooked by schools and forest school groups, so this idea has developed over the years.
"We have chosen to coppice some sweet chestnut at the suggestion of the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group.

"The construction will be run as a course teaching ancient carpentry techniques dating from medieval times."
These would include pegged mortise and tenon joints, using the adze and side axe, hand auger and two-man crosscut saw, and learning the techniques of plumb bobbing and lofting. The build weeks are scheduled for June 25 to 29 and July 28 to August 1.
