GWINEAR, Gwithian and St Erth voters are set to go to the polls today to elect a new Cornwall councillor.

The by-election follows the death of Ray Tovey.

Around 35 constituents attended a meeting organised by Gwinear-Gwithian and St Erth parish councils last week to enable the candidates to introduce themselves and answer questions.

St Erth parish clerk Pete Rylett said the evening had been a success and voters had grilled the would-be politicians on a number of topics: "It ranged from operational issues that make a difference to people's daily lives, such as toilets, up to more high-level issues such as the perception by the public that Cornwall Council is wasting huge amounts of money," he said.

Mr Rylett said the councils would consider holding a similar candidates' meeting ahead of next May's local elections.
