Meeting to address superstore proposals
A CAMPAIGN group trying to block any supermarkets opening in Wadebridge is to stage a public meeting.
Lovewadebridge.com has already collected more than 2,000 signatures on a petition concentrating on stopping Sainsbury's building on the current Cornwall Council offices at Higher Trenant.
A public meeting is to be held at the Town Hall on Friday October 30, chaired by Dan Rogerson MP. The protestors fear that the sale of the building is imminent, but Cornwall Council denies this.
Campaigner Tino Rawnsley said: "It would be disgraceful if they are rushing through a sale against the wishes of the people of the area. At least they should wait and hear what people really think."
In response a Cornwall Council spokesman said: "There is absolutely no truth in the suggestion that Cornwall Council has agreed to sell the site of the former North Cornwall District Council offices in Higher Trenant, Wadebridge, either to Sainsbury's or to anyone else. Sainsbury's representatives have made an unsolicited approach for the site to the Council, which the Council's officers are duty bound to consider."
