Meeting to discuss proceeds of building's sale
WAYS in which money raised from the sale of Helston's former community centre can be used are to be discussed at tonight's town council meeting.
The building was sold to a new arts group for more than £150,000 last summer.

Teresa Gleadowe, left, and Karen Townshend, trustees of the Cornubian Arts Centre Trust, outside the former Helston Community Centre which they hope will become an integral feature of the town.
But preliminary work has found a section of its roof could be structurally unsound. New owner the Cornubian Arts and Science Trust (Cast) aims to turn it into a centre for the arts, with h eavy community use and hopes it could become part of a "cultural quarter", especially if linked with the Helston Museum.
Members of Cast and others have described it as an "amazing opportunity" which could act as a catalyst for Helston's regeneration.

The building closed as a community centre a couple of years ago after its owners, the town council, said it could not legally renew the lease to its then users. This followed a failed campaign to save it as a community centre.
It has been suggested some of the money raised by the sale be ploughed back into the building but this was not thought to have received universal approval from councillors.
At tonight's meeting, Deputy Mayor Mike Thomas wants members to discuss the allocation of funds resulting from the sale of the building.

“Absolutely agree! Putting money from the sale back into this project will not only benefit the town but give a real sense of community.”

“I think this is a brilliant idea that people who live locally are putting money into the community for the benefit of Helston. As we all know Helston really needs a facelift and a reason for people to come in to the town and therefore keep the town alive. The council should most definitely plough money into this project so that we can all enjoy what could be a fantastic community centre and benefit everybody of all ages.”
