Mike's on the bag for Spaniard in Dubai win
A CORNISH caddy found himself in the limelight on the European Tour when he carried the bag of Spaniard Rafael Cabrera-Bello as he recorded the biggest win of his career at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday.
Mike Batty, who is the younger brother of Cornwall Golf Union secretary Peter Batty, was at the side of the 27-year-old from Las Palmas as he held his nerve to overtake Lee Westwood with a bogey-free final round of 68 to finish one stroke ahead of the World No 2 and Scot Stephen Gallacher, to win more than £250,000.

Mike Batty points the way to Spaniard Rafael Cabrera-Bello on his way to victory in Dubai at the weekend.
It was only the second win of Cabrera-Bello's career on the main European Tour and the first for Batty, who is a member at Newquay with a five handicap, after eight years on the circuit.
His brother Peter told me on Monday: "Mike has caddied for several pros on the circuit over the years, including players such as Miles Tunnicliffe, Sam Little, David Griffiths and Stephen O'Hara.
"He linked up with Rafael in June last year and they should have won the Portugal Masters last October but finished second. So it was very exciting watching last Sunday's victory.
"It was rather awkward really as I normally support Lee Westwood, but I couldn't help being not too upset when he missed a few putts which gave Mike's man the opportunity to win.
"Mike phoned from Dubai after the tournament and said he was really pleased as it's been a long-held ambition of his to caddy for a winner on the European Tour. It will certainly help to raise his profile as a caddy on the Tour."
Cabrera-Bello's victory qualified him to play in next week's WGC Accenture Match Play tournament at Dove Mountain, near Tucson, Arizona. And on his bag will be a 46-year-old Cornishman who will be doing everything in his power to help the Spaniard to another big pay day.
Porthpean professional Tony Nash will be surrounded by three Truro amateurs after booking his place in the final of the Perranporth Open Winter Foursomes for the second year running on Sunday.
At least Nash will have one of them on his side when he attempts to retain the title with his new partner, Glen Powell. But trying to prevent him winning the 36-hole final on Sunday, February 26, will be the Truro partnership of Kim Mundy – the last lady left in the competition - and Paul Martin.
In Sunday's semi-final it was tough going for the Nash and Powell, who trailed by two holes early on against former county champion Jon Coleman (West Cornwall) and James Davidson (Perranporth).
However, they pulled back to all square at the turn and held a one-hole lead going to the 18th tee. Coleman then had an eight-foot putt on the last green to take the match to extra holes, but his putt slipped past the hole to leave Nash and Powell, who had won their quarter-final match 3&2 earlier in the day, as narrow winners.
Mundy and Martin had an easier semi-final victory, easily defeating Falmouth's Dave Holland and Ritchie Perrin 6&5.
They went two up after five holes and then rattled off four birdies on the trot to race into a six-hole lead which the Falmouth pair could never claw back.
In the Plate competition Hayle teaching professional Wayne Graham and West Cornwall junior Matt Richards, who had earlier cruised to a 5&4 quarter-final victory, defeated St Enodoc pair John Pease and Kevin Brenton 2&1 to reach the final.
They will face another Truro pair Paul Trewhela and Matt Salmon, who defeated Carlyon Bay's Jason Gay and Kevin Martin 3&2, in the final, also on February 26.

Trethorne and Tehidy Park will battle out the final of the CAW Cornwall Bowl after they both won their semi-final matches by the same winning margin of 31/2 to 11/2 on Sunday.
Trethorne ended the hopes of last year's winners Carlyon Bay at Newquay, while
Tehidy Park, bidding to lift the trophy they last won in 2008, overcame Merlin at Perranporth.
Their win was founded on 3&2 wins in the top three matches by Julian Ridge and Bobby Stephens, Les Driver and Nathan Andrew and Marc Britton and James Jago, with Ken Allen and Treve Harris weighing in with a half.
The final is scheduled to be played at West Cornwall on Sunday, March 4.
The teams for the annual match between Cornwall's Amateur Winter Golf Series side and their professional counterparts from Cornwall and Devon PGA, to be played at Trevose on Sunday, March 4, have been announced.
The amateur team comprises the top eight in the WGS Order of Merit, plus wild cards Jon Coleman (West Cornwall) and Nick Gammon (Trevose).
The professionals will be without the unavailable Dominic Rehaag (China Fleet), who finished runner-up in the OoM behind Richard Sadler (Killiow), winner of the title for the third year on the trot.
As a result they have chosen the top seven in the OoM without Rehaag and three wild cards, who are Wayne Graham (Hayle Golf), Adam Gifford (Launceston) and Tony Pitts (St Austell).
Teams: Amateurs: Josh Greenaway (Bowood Park), Matt Richards (West Cornwall), Joe Cruse, Antony Nash, Steve Chapman (all St Enodoc), Richard Ackland (Trevose), Simon Knowles (Tehidy Park), Ben Armstrong (Carlyon Bay), Jon Coleman (West Cornwall), Nick Gammon (Trevose).

Trevose will be bidding to regain the Cornwall Team Championship (CTC) title they lost to St Enodoc last year when they take on West Cornwall in this year's semi-finals at Newquay on Sunday. They are able to field a full-strength side, unlike their opponents who will be without four first team regulars.
Trevose: Nick Gammon, Mike Reynard, Richard Ackland, Tom Fox, Jonathan Tremain, Steve Davies, Ben Westgate, Phil White, Joe Micklethwaite.
West Cornwall: Harry Hall, Dean Tulley, Peter Darlington, Peter Verran, Andy Postans, Lee Bushby, Adam Wade, Alex Glasson, Matt Richards.
The winners will face either Tehidy Park or Perranporth, who meet in the other semi-final at Trevose. Both matches start at 8am.

Perranporth: Nic Pepper, Chris Llewelyn, Conor Wilson, Sandy Kirton, Chris Fleming, Sam Chivers, Chris Johnston, Martin Edwards, Dave Harriss.
The two semi-finals in the CTC Plate competition also take place this Sunday. Launceston take on St Mellion at Trethorne (8.57am start), while Falmouth face St Austell at Perranporth (12pm).
A combined Under-14 and Under-16 team was due to play Surrey Under-14s at St Mellion tomorrow.
Cornwall Under14/16s (v Surrey Under-14s): Zak Omlo (St Austell), Jared Mortimore, Lewis Annear, Jake Finn and Ryan House (all Truro), Conor Davidson (Falmouth), Mike McElvey (Merlin), Kieran Faulkner (Looe), Niall Hutton (St Mellion), Rory Guy (Isles of Scilly), Steven Waddell (Carlyon Bay), Jordan Musitano (West Cornwall).
Abi Maude, of Carlyon Bay, has been named as the new county junior girls' captain.
A new competition for all 12 golf clubs in Cornwall that have so far achieved Golf Mark status has been announced by the county golf development officer Simon Wood.
The clubs are being invited to enter a team of four players – made up of one member from each of the male, female, senior and junior sections of the club – to play in a competition at St Austell on Sunday, May 27.
The event will be in a Stableford format off three-quarters handicap with two scores to count. The total combined handicap of the team must not exceed 72. The top two Cornwall teams from the event will go forward to the regional final to be held at Bristol Golf Club.
