Transport Minister Norman Baker has visited Exeter to back a new cycle hire scheme – and praise work on a major upgrade to the South West's road network.

The MP applauded the success of the £10.95 million project to improve Junction 29 of the M5 before visiting Exeter St David's Station to offer his support for the Brompton Dock cycle hire scheme.

The minister said: "We awarded £10.5 million of funding for Junction 29 back in 2011. To see this be approved and built within two years and to come and visit it for myself is quite a luxury within such a short space of time.

"This brings a boost to the region's economy and is a good example to see what can be achieved. It's been an ambitious and efficient programme which I'm pleased to see has been delivered on time."

The bike hire scheme launched in October provides members of the public with access to Brompton folding bikes, which can be taken on board trains or stored in the office.

Mr Baker said: "I also welcome the cycle hire scheme at Exeter St David's Station. I use a folding bike to get around London so I know first-hand the benefits they bring.

"This facility really showcases what can be achieved when transport providers come together to establish onward journey solutions for travellers."
