Minister's ideas to cut spending 'won't work'
Implementing all of the 50 ways that the Government is urging councils to save money would still not have a "significant" impact on the scale of the public sector cuts being imposed by Westminster, according to the chief executive of Plymouth City Council.
Local Government and Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has produced a document called 50 Ways to Save which he says should be the blueprint for local authorities to cut costs in the age of austerity.
It contains suggestions such as sharing services, stopping funding for expensive leadership courses and attendance at "glitzy" award bashes as well as a suggestion to scrap refreshments at council meetings.
With Plymouth City Council facing cuts of £30 million over three years, Ms Lee said that even implementing all 50 suggestions would not do much to alleviate pressure on council budgets. "In terms of looking at those savings, I don't think there's anything there that won't have been considered at some point. Those savings will not be significant in the scheme of the overall picture of local government financing in the future," she said.
