SAVE Penwith Moors campaigners are demanding National Trust to take drastic action over the changes made on West Penwith's open moorland to restore heathland.

The protesters are unhappy with the installation of a drain at Carn Galva and a cattle grid on Watch Croft.

The HEATH project was set up to restore the heathland landscape and habitat to improve public access, benefit wildlife and protect the area's archaeology.

But it has come under fire as campaigners claim it is damaging the area's tourist industry, restricting access and damaging the prehistoric Tregeseal Circle.

Eight members of the campaign group have now signed a letter sent to the National Trust area manager demanding someone to be held accountable.

Tragic

Member Ian Cooke said: "The present tragic situation at Carn Galva and Watch Croft does nothing to inspire public confidence in the ability of the National Trust. We believe the HEATH project should be abandoned forthwith and the moors restored to their former state prior to these recent works."

The National Trust has defended the scheme which it says will improve public access, benefit wildlife and protect the area's important archaeology. A spokesman for the landowning charity said: "The next steps at Carn Galva are to agree the details of some remedial work with the HEATH partners with the intention that this work is carried out from the end of June.

"A progress report will be given at the next West Penwith Forum meeting in early July.

"At the meeting the Trust intends to set out a programme of work relating to future management arrangements of all the sites in its care included within the HEATH scheme – in order that it is clear to everyone what will be happening on Trust land going forward."
